BUILDING IN STONE AND IRON

The 2006 Study Tour of the Society will take place from June 19 - 24, based in Worcester.
Initial details follow - more later.
Based at the Fownes Hotel, which seems to meet all our requirements!
Itinerary:
Monday June 19 arrive for dinner at 7.00 pm

Tuesday June 20 : to Benthall Hall (NT) a 16th C house with 'stunning interior' and situated on a plateau above the gorge of the River Severn and then to Ironbridge for lunch and independent visits.

Wednesday June 21: via the Malvern Hills to Hellens built as a monastery and then a fortress in 1292 and still lived in by descendants of the original builder and then to Hereford for guided tour of the Cathedral, the Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library.

Thursday June 22: to Berrington Hall (near Leominster) (NT) beautifully set above a tributary of the River Lugg with views to the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. Plain neo-classical exterior with lavish interior by Holland. Lunch here or in Ludlow where we spend the afternoon visiting the church, castle etc. This visit to Ludlow will not be guided.

Friday June 23: In Worcester (no coach travel) morning visit to the Royal Doulton factory for a guided tour. Lunch there or in the Cathedral refectory (a few minutes walk) a guided tour of the Cathedral (to be arranged), free visit to Greyfriars (NT) - a restored 1480 house with noteworthy textiles and interesting furniture ...free time in Worcester.
Saturday June 24 depart after breakfast.

Expected Cost: £375 per person in twin bedded room : £475 for single room accommodation
Costs include dinner, bed, breakfast, coach travel, entrance fees (except during independent visits and for non-NT members at NT properties) all gratuities BUT not lunches, drinks (Fownes has half and quarter bottles of wine!), newspapers, personal gratuities in rooms.
