The Study Tour June 8 - 13 2003
The Society’s study tour in 2003 will take place from June 8th. to 13th and will be centred on Newcastle upon Tyne. The main Accommodation has been reserved at the Royal Station Hotel, which is immediately adjacent to Newcastle station (one can in fact walk into the hotel from the station concourse.) We meet for dinner in the hotel on Sunday evening (8th). On Monday (9th) our first event will be a guided walking tour of old Newcastle finishing at the new millennium bridge. We cross the bridge to the Baltic Centre art gallery where lunch may be taken. In the afternoon we shall have a conducted tour of the adjacent Music Centre Gateshead, which is still under construction, and there will be the opportunity to make unescortedvisitstothe galleries of the Baltic Centre. We return to the hotel for dinner . On Tuesday (10th) we shall be taken by coach northwards from the hotel to Chillingham Castle for a conducted tour. Chillingham is a medieval castle with great halls and state- rooms being brought back to life with antique furniture, tapestries, arms and armour. There are breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside.
The costs will cover bed, breakfast and dinner at the hotel, coach trips, gratuities, services of guides, and donations. Some places that we shall visit (Cragside and Hadrian’s wall) are National Trust properties and members will not be charged for admission. Non-NT members will need to pay ‘at the door’. Entrance charges to properties that are not NT are covered by the Study Tour costs. Not covered are: travel to Newcastle, gratuities to hotel staff, drinks and wine at the hotel. The possibility of a group ticket for rail travel from Brighton to Newcastle can be investigated if there is sufficient demand. On the above basis the total charge per person in a single room will be £472 , and £347 per person sharing a double room. The Society will require a deposit of £100 per person to confirm numbers at the rates we have been offered with the hotel. The balance will be payable in May.
After lunch we shall visit Cragside, one of the most modern and surprising houses for its time (1880s) and which became known as “The Palace of a modern magician”. On Wednesday (11th) our coach will take us to see Hadrian’s wall. Several sites could be visited and views are being sought on the itinerary that will be the most productive in the time available. In the afternoon we shall visit Meldon Park, a house built by John Dobson for the Cookson family. Between the two World Wars Edwin Lutyens was employed to enrich the Hall. The garden has a wonderful collection of rhododendrons best seen in early June. On Thursday (12th) we take the coach to the Beamish living museum with its examples of life in the last two centuries. We shall be free to explore on an individual basis since there are no guided tours. After lunch we return by coach at about 3-4 pm to Newcastle Cathedral for a guided tour followed by Evensong for those who wish to stay. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the Cathedral. We leave after breakfast on Friday 13th.
Regency Society Reception at "A SEASIDE ALBUM" A private evening opening for members with a talk from Philippe Garner The Regency Society is supporting the major exhibition A Seaside Album: photographs and memory, which runs at Brighton Museum from 10 May until 8 October. This exceptional display of photographs, drawn from Philippe Garner's remarkable collection, shows the changing face of Brighton & Hove from the 1840s to the early 1990s. It is described in our January newsletter. Members will receive their invitations in due course.
Midsummer Party in The Secret Garden We are most grateful to Yvonne Dale, who is once again opening her beautiful, secluded garden in Kemptown for the Regency Society's midsummer party. Members will enjoy music from the Brighton Youth Orchestra and refreshments will be served. A delightful ambience in which to meet old friends and make new ones.
