Ever since the founding of the Society there has been a strong connection with the Church of St. Nicholas - the old Parish Church of Brighton. The Society's records show frequent representations made to Brighton Corporation regarding the condition of the churchyard and its monuments, and its accounts reveal a number of donations to aid conservation of the fabric.
Once again the church has made an appeal for funds to assist the restoration of the Victorian decorations.Although the general position of the city's churches is a parlous one as may be seen here, St. Nicholas occupies a special position, not least due to its relative antiquity (albeit now largely of victorian design), manageable size and geographical location at the core of the city.
The congregation has already carried out substantial remedial works: a legacy to the Friends of St. Nicholas from the late Fr. Derek Moody allowed the latter's wish to see the cleaning of the Lady Chapel's ceiling to be undertaken, while bequests from Dr. Michael Hooker and Doreen Pierce are the basis for the current appeal.
This appeal was launched to raise £115,000 to allow the restoration of the rood screen and all of the victorian decorations.
There has been a good reponse, and the Society is pleased to record a donation of £1500 to this appeal.
