A PRINCE'S PASSION: The Life of the Royal Pavilion
Jessica Rutherford (£14.95, from the Royal Pavilion Shop
)
The first book to trace its social history and examine Brighton's famous landmark from a new perspective. It also places the Royal Pavilion in the context of the social mores and technical advances of the Regency Period. This account reveals how the Royal Pavilion functioned as a “living” palace, describing both its public face - experienced by guests and visitors - and the complex running of this establishment behind the scenes. The author paints a vivid picture of every aspect of palace life in the extravagant heyday of the Royal Pavilion and follows its changing fortunes up to the present time.

THE LANDSCAPE BOOK OF BRIGHTON PRINTS
Brighton Books Publishing, 10,Clermont Road, Brighton
BN1 6SG
01273 509209
Price: £14.99

Selma Montford and Jacqueline Pollard of Brighton Books Publishing have produced a most attractive volume of the Brighton prints in the collection of John Coleman. These range from early views of the Steine to polished perspectives of St. Peter’s church. Of course, they reveal how much has changed ( or been destroyed, as in the case of The National School shown here on the right, held by Antony Dale to be “a criminal folly”) but also how much of the structure of the city has remained.
This is not an academic offering, more a visual delight in 26 plates revealing the relatively recent past, while a narrative written by invited experts fills in the gaps.

While 'A Prince's Passion' and 'Set for a King' are only available through the Royal Pavilion Shop,a good source for similar books of local interest is City Books, 23 Western Road,Brighton. Tel:01273 725306

Brighton in the Thirties

"The interviews conducted by Jacqueline Pollard, and the written accounts, provide a close focus view of people's lives in the 1930s and'40s.In many cases they have detailed their experiences through their eyes as children.
The contrast with our expectations of life today is dramatic..."

A terrific volume and a must for anyone who wasn't there.

A Brighton Neighbourhood

Eyewitness accounts of life in this area of Brighton - a record rather than a history. Once open fields and market gardens, now "...a fizz, a buzz,a liveliness and a sense of community that sets it apart. Hanover is Hanover, and not Brighton"

But as this volume shows, times could be harsh.

With many photographs from the James Gray Collection.
